Finding Quality Literature for Children

From the broad array of children's books found in bookstores and libraries selection of quality books may be simplified using the references listed below. 

American Library Association sponsors two annual awards and the cumulative lists over the years are highly recommended.

The Newbery Medal named in honor of John Newbery, the first English publisher and seller of children's books, was first presented in 1922. the Award is given to the author of the most outstanding book for children published in the United States during the previous year. 

The Caldecott Medal named in honor of Randolph Caldecott, a noted 18th century English illustrator of books for children, was first presented in 1938. The award is given to the illustrator  of the most outstanding book for children published in the United States during the previous year. 

Smithsonian Magazine’s Notable Book List also provides some excellent books for intermediate and middle school youth. 

The Young Adult Library Services Association maintains an excellent site that features booklists and book awards, but also has a full menu of other resources. 

The International Reading Association is an excellent resource for the Children’s Choices, Young Adults’ Choices and Teachers’ Choices Award Lists.  This organization also has a wealth of information about children’s reading and may prove helpful for information about teaching and motivating children to read.
