Music at Gloria Dei

The music program at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is an integral part of the worship life of the parish. It seeks to express God’s love and glory and enhance our liturgies through inspiring and artistic expressions of our faith and praise.

In keeping with the rich heritage of the Lutheran Church and establishing a tradition of excellence while recognizing the interdependence of spiritual and musical growth, the music program seeks to offer learning opportunities for all of its members. It also hopes to make a special contribution to the cultural life of the greater Wichita community and, in doing so, strives to enrich the lives of those it touches and to gather into the assembly those who believe in and work to advance the message of God’s love. There is a place in the Gloria Dei music program for anyone who wishes to learn, grow, serve and praise God in song. Come and join us as we make a joyful noise to the Lord.

Musical Opportunities:

                                    ADULTS AND YOUTH
PARISH CHOIR
High School-Adult

This choir is open to all high school age through adults.  Childcare is provided. The Parish Choir leads and embellishes the 11:00 AM Eucharist each Sunday from September to Pentecost and at other special events throughout the year. The Parish Choir sings a wide variety of the choral literature using our vast choral heritage and seeking out the most durable music of our time as well as the propers of the liturgy. The love of singing and a commitment to attendance are needed.

GLORIA DEI RINGERS
High School-Adult

Open to those high school age through adult, the Gloria Dei Ringers rehearse in the Music Room (second floor) on Wednesdays. For those who don’t sing, handbells provide an excellent opportunity to enrich our worship. The Gloria Dei Ringers play for various Eucharists and other special services. Many times the bells will ring with the vocal choirs. Music reading is helpful but not required. A commitment to attendance is needed.

CANTOREI (ASSISTING CANTOR’S GUILD)
High School-Adult
The Cantorei is open to those high school age through adult. Music is sent in advance and Cantorei members are responsible for learning the music on their own. A brief rehearsal is held before any given liturgy. Our assisting cantors lead the psalm and propers at every Eucharist. Experienced cantors new to the parish are invited to become a part of the Cantorei. Less-experienced individuals with a desire to lead our sung prayer are invited to contact the Cantor to develop their skills as a part of this vital ministry. Music reading and a pleasant singing voice are essential. The ability to sing comfortably for large groups (without amplification) and a meeting with the music director are required.

INSTRUMENTALISTS
High School-Adult
For those middle school age through adult who play a symphonic musical instrument there are many opportunities throughout the year to utilize their individual talents. Rehearsals are scheduled with the music director as needed. Those who are interested are invited to contact the music director, must be able to read music, be comfortable playing in front of large crowds and an audition is necessary.

                                CHILDREN AND YOUTH

JUBILATE RINGERS (YOUTH BELLS)
Children - Youth

Those in grades 6 through 12 are eligible for this ensemble. Rehearsals are held in the Music Room (second floor) on Wednesdays from 6:00-6:30 PM. The Jubilate Ringers (Youth Bells) play for various Eucharists and other special services. Many times the bells will ring with the vocal choirs. Music reading is helpful but not required. A commitment to attendance is needed.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR
Children

The Children’s Choir is open to all in grades 2-5. The Children’s Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:00 PM in the Music Room (second floor). The Children’s Choir sings at Eucharists and other services throughout the year. Choristers are exposed to basic musical skills while learning the core repertoire of the Church from all periods. The love of singing and a commitment to attendance are all that is needed. We are always looking for new singers. The Children’s Choir begins rehearsals on September 21 at 5:30 PM.

PIPE ORGAN
The organ at Gloria Dei was built for the church and installed in 1996/1998 by the Schantz Organ Company in Orrville, Ohio (Op. 2115). It contains 28 ranks (sets) of nearly 1,700 pipes, the smallest being smaller than a pencil, to the largest of over 16 feet long in the facade of polished tin. The organ also includes a Zimbelstern, a set of rotating bells. The two manual drawknob console is now located in the middle of the choir loft.
